Building Stabilities
is a community making, social
practice that addresses the more
tangible goals of this work as an edifying
earth-based spritiuality. Using natural
processes as an inspiration, it
approaches object making in a space
in which participants can make
relationships while expressing
themselves artistically. Rocks are an
ideal symbol of the planet’s ability to
create infinite individuality within a
unifying, interdependent ubiquity. This
action creates a space inwhich these
truths can be considered and
expressed while building a supportive
inclusive community. Open to all ages,
abilities, and identities, the uniqueness
of expression is held together by the
consistency of the form. Materials are
a collection of rock forms combining
recycled materials and actual rocks
erased in detail with white paint
allowing people to start from a clean
visual slate. All types of materials are
the layering elements that develop
objects the way sedimentary stone is
made, layer byayer, slowly or quickly.
Fabric, string, thread, paper, foams,
paint, sticks, leaves, glues, textiles,
cotton, newspaper, wire. The work is
formed by wrapping, glueing, painting,
weaving, and building up in layers. The
space to create, talk, be silent, and
connect opens a spoken and
unspoken dialogue with the objects
Memories rise to the surface,
conversations form about the past,
present, future. This work of making
together creates and strengthens
relationships in the room reminding us
this is the true stability.
